La grande forge is the realization of the steel project by Count de Buffon, Georges-Louis LECLERC. It was in 1768 that he decided to utilize his discoveries and experiments on iron. The Montbard steel region was the ideal location for this project, especially since he had owned the lands of Buffon since 1732. Construction began in 1768, the blast furnace was operational by 1769, and the other buildings were completed in 1772, just twenty minutes away from Maison Jazey.
